Blouberg Strand is home of the famous Red Bull King of the Air event. Therefore, it’s quite common during November / December to witness big air kite boarding professionals training at this spot to get used to the conditions for the competition.
It offers a stunning view to the city of Cape Town with the scenic table mountain and lions head in its background. A dense cloud covering the table mountain (the „table cloth“) is a sign for strong south eastern wind (the „cape doctor“). The conditions may vary from choppy water and light wind to high waves and nuking wind.
📍 Kite Spot: Bloubergstrand – Dolphin Beach
ℹ️ Spot description
The most southern spot at the beachfront, located in front of the dolphin hotel. During the Red Bull King of the Air event the Dolphin Hotel hosts a lot of the professional kite surfers. So it’s quite likely to see them on this spot during end of November / start of December.
The spot consists of a wide beach with lot of space. Depending on the conditions the waves can be quite big and serve as kickers. In that case it is challenging to manage to get beyond the area where the waves are breaking – timing and good decision making is key.
🧭 Arrival
The parking area is right next to the spot. However, during peak season it can be quite tough to claim a free spot. It is common to give the parking personell some tip. As shown in the picture below, the seaside is only a few meters away.
📍 Kite Spot: Bloubergstrand – Kite Beach
ℹ️ Spot description
Kite Beach is further up north of Dolphin Beach. Due to the C-shaped coastline, the wind angle of attack is a bit different. Other than that, the conditions are quite similar to entering at Dolphin Beach.
🧭 Arrival
The traffic at this area is more busy. Dedicated parking areas as well as parallel parking can be used as a starting point for the session.
