The Chiemsee is a big lake in Germany close to the Austrian Border. During windy days the lake has impressive waves like the sea. During the spring and the fall season Chiemsee has many windy days with a reliable forecast. That’s why Chiemsee is the go-to spot for many kite surfer, winger and windsurfer.
📍 Kite Spot: Chieming
ℹ️ Spot description
This spot is on the eastern shore of Chiemsee. It works good with west wind which can be forecasted with the superforecast (for the upcoming three days) at Windfinder Chieming / Windfinder Chiemsee / Chieming.
To enter the water there are 3 common options:
- Setup the kite gear at the gravel shore
Depending on the tide it is possible prepare for launching on the gravel bench between lake and trees. This is probably the safer option. However, at high tide this area is flooded and therefore not possible to do a dry launch from there.
- Setup the kite gear on the gras
About 500 meters south there is a field where you can prepare your session comfortably too. After that you launch the kite behind the trees which separate the gras from the lake side.
The tricky part is to descend to the water through stairs with your kite in the air. All while watching out that the lines are not getting entangled at the branches of the tree. This is only recommended for well experienced kiters, since the staircase could function as a ramp for the wind which makes the gusty wind even less predictable.
- Close to the shore the water is really shallow, so as an alternative it is also possible to go for a drift launch while standing in the water already
Thankfully, people have marked the areas which are too shallow to surf with “stone man” (stacked stones).
As described above the lake can turn into a wavy playground. Combined with the quickly changing and gusty wind conditions kiters have to be alert to the conditions and chosen setup all the time.
🧭 Arrival
Chiemsee is easily accessible through the highway. After taking the exit “Grabenstätt” it takes about 10 minutes to the parking area of the spot.
The parking lot is right next to the spot. Parking costs about 5€ for the whole day if you get a printed ticket from the machine. It is recommended to download the Parkster App instead. Buying the ticket online with this service allows you to only pay for the time you actually stayed. This usually is cheaper than getting the printed ticket for the entire day.
