Fuerteventura is one of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean and belongs to Spain. On windless days you cans nice to visit some volcanoes, catch some waves and finish the day with a nice Spanish dinner. However, Fuerteventura has a lot of kite spots to offer. With its crystal clear water, lagoons and the Atlantic Ocean are a popular playground for many kiters.

📍 Kite Spot: Sotavento – Playa de la Barca

ℹ️ Spot description

Sotavento is a spot located far in the south on the eastern shore of the island. Depending on the tide Sotavento offers a flat water lagoon just in front of the ION Club Fuerteventura. It is used for kite surf lessons and smooth twintip sessions. A approximately 20 meter sand bench separates the lagoon from the more wavy ocean.

During the day (until approximately 17:00 o’clock) jetskis offer their help and serve as safety shuttles. The cost of a rescue shuttle is about 40€. Since the wind is often in offshore direction it is advised to only kite this spot with available rescue service and after 17:00 o’clock only for advanced kiters with a feeling when the wind drops and keeping height gets harder.

Make sure to bring your own food and water supplies because the next beach bar is further up north at the spot René Egli which is described below.

🧭 Arrival

After leaving the FV-2 coastal road a bumpy sand / gravel road leads directly to the spot. Watch out for big potholes, your car will thank you later.

There is a parking lot right next to the ION Center which is for free. From there just grab your gear and get ready for the session

📍 Kite Spot: Sotavento – René Egli

ℹ️ Spot description

The spot is named after René Egli who is the organiser and a participant in the first PBA Windsurf Speed World Cup in Fuerteventura. It is located next to the Hotel Meliá Fuerteventura.

The conditions are comparable to Sotavento – Playa de la Barca in further south. It overwhelms kiters with its crystal water and reliable wind conditions. Similarly instructors are giving lessons to aspiring kite surfers and rescue shuttles offer their help when needed. Additionally, there are shuttle buses to give a lift to Playa de la Barca to the lagoon.
