Do you prefer flat water or big wave kite surfing? How about a spot that has it all? Hermanus offers a flat water lagoon and big waves at the ocean really close to it. If the conditions are suitable you can even surf from the ocean to the lagoon.

📍 Kite Spot: Hermanus – Grotto Beach

â„šī¸ Spot description

At Grotto Beach there is plenty of space to set up your gear in the smooth sand without a lot of muscels. Make sure to remember where you put your belongings because after the session it might be covered by sand.

Spacious area for setup, launching and landing

The ocean offers a lot of kickers for right foot forward jumps. During December it is quite common to see professional kite surfers practicing their tricks with extreme heights and unparalleled style. It is quite tough to predict their trajectories. Make sure to keep enough distance to avoid accidents.

Depending on the tide, the lagoon is connected to the ocean via a river. If you feel comfortable riding in the river it is a fast way to transfer to the flat water area of this spot. It is not recommended to cross the dunes to switch between ocean and lagoon, because snakes were reported in this ares. In case the lagoon is crowded, be mindful with your maneuvers.

After a successful session showers at the parking lot allow to rinse your salt watered and sand blasted gear and wetsuit. Your gear and car will appreciate that treatment.
