Mondsee is an Austrian lake located east of Salzburg next to the Attersee. The required skill level is set to “Expert” because you need to know what to do from predicting the perfect day, to finding a spot to park you car and last but not least to launch and land your kite. However, after jumping all these hoops, kiting at Mondsee is a rewarding experience and a spot only kited by a handful of people .

📍 Kite Spot: Fischzucht

ℹ️ Spot description

This spot works only during autumn season when a thick fog is covering the neighbor lake Attersee. To check this condition the Schafberg – Panomax Webcam can be used. When the sun is shining and the fog is dissolving over Mondsee there is a local phenomenon locals call “Düse” which means nozzle in German. The wind accelerates through the bottleneck formed by the shores. The resulting cold air wind can be really powerful despite comparably flat water. Check Mondsee Düse for live footage of the conditions.

The spot is a public swimming area which is usually not used by swimmers during the autumn season. However, it is a pretty popular entry for wing surfers and kite surfers are the exception. Make sure to respect and support each other at the spot.

At the spot’s meadow plenty of space is available to set up the gear and connect the lines

After connecting the bar, roll up the lines to be more compact to carry the equipment and maneuver through the gap below the trees to get to the lake. Because of the trees and the water getting deep really fast, a water start appears to be the safest way.

If available let someone help you to position you and the kite safely. Alternatively a drift launch is also possible but more risky.

Water start: Position yourself next to the fence post and the kite in the power zone close to the reeds

🧭 Arrival

To get to the spot, a beautiful road next to Mondsee is used. On the way there don’t look for whitecaps while still being kilometers away from the spot, since the rest of the lake usually stays flat despite local windy section.

The parking area is really small and can be crowded. If possible share rides with your buddies to have an easier time finding a spot for your vehicle. The upside is, that parking is free of charge and directly next to the spot.
